Diy cracked ceilings and cornices

Any ceiling that has cracks in it is usually due to movement within the structure itself. If the building or frame work moves around from expansion of materials then it is possible for plaster joints to come apart and crack. Some products on the market these days can accommodate the shrinkage and expansion of a building. if you need to repair a crack it would be wise to do it properly than just cover it over waiting for it to crack again. The ceiling or cornice that is cracked needs to be repaired by means of removing all the cracked area along the joint of plaster ready to be taped and filled again. tools required for the job are a, stanley knife, 4 inch scraper blade for setting, plasterers tape, base coat, sand paper, plasterers sanding block and top coat filler, this can be bought as a ready mixed plaster that already has the base and top coat all in one. the the tape needs to be under the surface of the plaster board so as you finish up with a smooth ceiling at the end of the project. so taking out all that old joint setting that is cracked is important. usually just scraping it all out with an old chisel will do the job. make sure you don't break to much of the plaster board under the joint plaster though, you will need to set back onto the existing plaster board. Once the plaster is hard and dry you can sand it smooth prior to painting.
