How To "DIY"
Cracked brickwork and loose mortar joints
There are generally two ways of bedding bricks together. one is the old way when cement was not a factor in the mixing of the mortar process like it is today,
If you have cement mortar joining your bricks together does not mean you wont get cracks. Most cracks are caused from movement from the soil the house or building structure that it sits upon.
If you would like to know if your house has the soft lime mortar or cement mortar, just simply use an old chisel of some sort and scrape between the bricks along the joint.
If the mortar comes out easily, then chances are your old house is built with soft mortar. this is not a bad thing, as soft mortar allows movement with less visible cracking.
When new houses crack along the brickwalls it can look pretty nasty indeed. fixing the problem can be costly.
If you can fix the movement underneath the wall first by means of under pinning, then maybe you could render the wall or re point the cement mortar to fix its look and structure.
